Джан Ку
Jan Coo (Джан Ку) is a Russian alternative rock/trip-hop band founded in St. Petersburg in 1991, led by vocalist and guitarist Xenia Yermakova (Ксения Ермакова). The band made its live debut in 1994, and released their first album, Labirint, in 1996. The band is named after a mysterious voice featured in a folk-tale from a Devon (England).
The band's sound is notoriously difficult to classify, with elements of grunge, progressive/psychedelic-rock and trip-hop, the latter of which have become more predominant in Jan Coo's later work. Yermakova's harsh, androgynous vocals are a defining element throughout. Themes of alienation, frustration with society, and spiritual development predominate in the lyrics.
The current line-up of the band includes:
Xenia Yermakova (Ксения Ермакова) - vocals, flute
Dmitriy Ivanov (Дмитрий Иванов) - guitar
Lev Savranskiy (Лев Савранский) - bass
Sergei Zhilkin (Сергей Жилкин) - drums
Jan Coo have released 5 studio albums to date:
1996 — Лабиринт [Labyrinth]
1999 — jan_coo
2000 — Свобода [Freedom]
2003 — Последняя капля [Last Drop]
2007 — Молекулы мистики [Molecules of Mystique]
