Alma Desnuda
Alma Desnuda, with its eye-catching showmanship, is a 4-man band of kindred spirits whose diverse musical expression blends sincere vocal confessions, funk-drenched bass lines, earthy deep percussion, and ethereal overtones into an acoustically groovin’ cocktail of soul-awakening music. While ever-expansive and diverse in presentation, Alma Desnuda weaves an underlying thread of palpable energy and passion into every note they play, a palpability that touches your senses and brings you more deeply into contact with your world. Awaken the soul.
Deriving their name from the Spanish translation of “Naked Soul”, Alma Desnuda spreads a poignant message of community and self-abandonment through the use of what they call ‘socially digestible capsules.’ Given their rapidly budding fan base after their award-winning single Walls, and with the release of their debut album Middleway, it seems as though everyone they encounter has been eating up these ‘capsules’ by the fistful.
Back in 2002, before there was Alma Desnuda there were three guys from California, Paul Suhr, Joe Glaser and Chris Bryden, who met on a study abroad term in Cordoba, Spain. The bond they formed during that time was based on an unshakable passion for living life to its fullest. After spending the next five years following their own paths through various countries (Korea, Peru, Ukraine, and India, to mention a few), the three reunited in the Bay Area in 2007 and hooked up with national and world-touring bassist Tony Glaser with a rekindled passion for creating music that is a celebration of life, a catalyst for change, and a source of hope.
With a unique versatility that allows them to transition seamlessly from a full-out dancing, high-energy concert venue to the intimacy of a small, unplugged/acoustic coffee shop, Alma Desnuda can adapt to whatever the situation requires. They know that when they stay in the present moment, their music expresses itself in the right way, nakedly, as they let their abiding faith in the goodness of their message take them where it will.
Alma Desnuda made a notable appearance in Merton the piano improv guy's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PUgBT9M0Ag video. A large number of their fans discovered them through this spontaneous collaborative moment.
Alma Desnuda creates music to promote kindness and embrace the fullness of the human spirit. With funky grooves, earthy percussion, and vocal harmonies, its fresh blend of rock appeals to most any audience bringing forth smiles and dancing.
Four talented and tightly-bonded musicians strive to connect with their listeners to expand the reaches of their own songwriting while inspiring everyone they encounter to radiate positive energy. Their individual and combined works in spiritual exploration, natural healing, world travel, and volunteerism contribute to a sound that extends well beyond the music itself. And their showmanship leaves no crowd untouched.
From their grassroots following at smaller venues in the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California, the band has moved up to performing at larger, coveted, and world-renowned establishments including the Great American Music Hall, the Independent, and Yoshis; all the while continuing their pledge to support social justice organizations such as the Mind Body Awareness Project, Food Not Bombs, and the Lincoln Child Center.
