Angelo Venuto
Angelo Venuto was born in Sicily. He has six other brothers and sisters, he is the fourth child. Angelo’s parents are Marie and John Venuto. At the age of ten, he moved to the United States. Angelo was always a huge fan of music and started teaching himself guitar at age nine. His parents greatly encouraged this. He later learned how to play the bass, keyboard, and drums. By the age of twelve, he and his brothers had formed a band. He dedicated his entire life to music; he knew that this would be the most important thing in his life.
As a child, and even now, he drew all the time. He grew up on 84th Street, in Brooklyn, in Bensonhurst, a big Italian community. His band started as a neighborhood band. He went to high school on 80th street and 16th Avenue New Utrecht. He graduated in 1976. The name of the band Caleps stands for the names of the brothers in the band; Carmelo, Angelo, Lorenzo, Enzo, Peter, and Sal. After the Caleps he created the band: Voices. He also went solo and created three hits that made it to the charts.
He soon became well known in the Italian-American community. Angelo played in the Caleps, did concerts at the Walker Theater on 18th Avenue. He played a lot of wedding in places such as Hollywood Terrace, Glen Terrace, Cotillion Terrace. When he was young, Angelo was on stage in Carnegie Hall in New York City with Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and Tony Bennett. He also preformed with Gloria Gaynor, a disco diva, and many other celebrities. He and his band recorded an album, Soccer, which hit the top ten on billboard charts. Angelo himself composed all the music and lyrics. He preformed for people such as Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, former Senator Alphonse D’Amato, and former Senator Robert DeCarlo. He was also invited to perform for President Reagan after one of his speeches in Miami, Florida for the International Longshoremen Association in July of 1983. They have performed at man charity events, such as the Jerry Lewis telethon at the Ed Sullivan theatre in New York City. Angelo has also helped with feed the world foundation for the Italian-American community. The boys, he and his brothers, have been able to perform all over the world, including main U.S. states, the Caribbean, and Europe. They also preformed for the Italian cruise line, Costa Cruises in 1990. For the past twelve years they have been performing for one week every year on the cruise line.
Angelo shares his music with his wife, Gisella, and their three daughters, Maria Ilena, Connie Ann, and Alexa. Although he is a very successful man, he is still a very modest person. He does not let his fame get in the way of his everyday life. He works as a checker for the ILA, meaning that he works on piers at Berth Four in Newark. He currently lives in Brooklyn. I have myself personally met Angelo Venuto; he is one of the nicest men that I have ever known.
