Archangel Voices
Archangel Voices is a professional-level vocal ensemble whose goal is to create high-quality recordings of Orthodox liturgical music in the English language, and giving special emphasis to the creations of contemporary composers and arrangers, both living and recently deceased. Through its CDs, the ensemble aims to bring the beauty of Orthodox liturgical music before a wide audience of listeners, to serve as a vehicle for spreading the Orthodox faith through music, and to embrace various traditions and styles of Orthodox church music as they are manifest in the practice of parishes in North America.
TITLES:
Lamentations: Orthodox Chants of Holy Week (2009)
Sung exclusively in English, this CD presents the best-loved Hymns of Holy Week, drawing upon the richess of various chant traditions as they co-exist in America--Byzantine (Greek, Antiochian, Romanian), Russian, Serbian, and Bulgarian, as well as new compositions and adaptations.
The Orthodox Divine Liturgy (Master, Bless!) (2007)
This CD presents the Orthodox Divine Liturgy in its richest, most majestic form--when a bishop serves. The resplendent singing of the mixed choir alternates with angelic trios and the sonorous singing of the clergy choir. Where appropriate, the congregation joins in with joyful refrains of antiphonal psalmody.
With the Voice of the Archangel (2003)
From the earliest days of the Christian Church, the solo voice has always played an important role in liturgical singing. In the Byzantine tradition, the art of the solo chanter (or psaltis) remains prominent to this day. In the Slavic tradition, the last 300 years have witnessed the development of a choral tradition; but certain elements of the services have continued to be chanted either by a solo voice or by a trio of solo voices.
Christ is Born, Give Glory! (2005)
A delightful selection of hymns and carols for the Feast of the Nativity of Christ (also encompassing the pre-festal period). This CD offers a variety of compositions and chant arrangements by some of North America's leading composers and arrangers, both living and recently deceased. The repertoire draws upon various traditions of styles of Orthodox church music, particularly as they are manifest in the practice of parishes in North America.
Resurrection! (2006)
On this CD the Archangel Voices vocal ensemble explores a rich variety of Orthodox liturgical repertoire in the English language, focusing on the hymns of Pascha. The present CD draws widely upon both Byzantine and Slavic heritage and includes selections from the traditional repertoire of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries (Bortniansky, Dyletskiy, Makarov) as well as settings by contemporary American Orthodox composers--Walter Obleschuk, Alexander Ruggieri, Jessica Suchy-Pilalis, and Tikey Zes, among others.
