Researches begun years ago, diggin’ dusty vinyl crates for obscure samples. The discovery of Italian '60s and '70s soundtracks was a crucial point; from that moment on nothing sounded as good and interesting as electrifying tracks from exploitation movies.
By the summer of 2007 time was ready and producer Tommaso Colliva (Muse, Franz Ferdinand, Phoenix, Arto Lindsay) invited an incredible jam band formed by Massimo Martellotta (Stewart Copeland, Eugenio Finardi, Mauro Pagani) on guitars and lapsteels, Enrico Gabrielli (Afterhours, Mariposa, Morgan) keyboards and brass, Fabio Rondanini (Pino Marino, Roberto Angelini, Collettivo Angelo Mai) on drums and Luca Nano Cavina (Transgender, Lindo Ferretti, Beatrice Antolini) on bass to record at omniaB studios in Milan.
During that first two days long recording session Calibro 35 became a killer combo performing classic and obscure themes, trying to bring something contemporary to the compositions but still remaining very respectful to the originals. Original tunes appeared soon with the same aim, recreating the attitude, the sound and that strange mixture between jazz, funk, rock, classical and improvisation that made Italian soundtracks known worldwide.
Band started touring few months later, having his first ever gigs in Luxemburg and Belgium and then moving back to Italy for some very crowded show during spring and summer 2008. Meanwhile the single "L'Appuntamento" gave Calibro35 lot of airplay on commercial radios. Both traditional (BBC Funk&Soul show among the others) and online European radios played "Italia A Mano Armata" and other songs from the debut CD. The first self-titled album came out on October 2008 on Cinedelic records, CDs and double LPs is now available worldwide. The album got some enthusiastic reviews on Italian and international press and obtained very high rates on a lot of music magazines. On December 2008 Calibro 35 completed its first original soundtrack for a pulp movie titled "Said", directed by Joseph Lefevre. That was the perfect chance to have the band recording live during the film projection at Forum Studios in Rome, founded by Morricone himself on 1969.
Calibro 35 played more than forty shows during spring and summer 2009. The new single “Tutta Donna” featuring American singer Georgeanne Kalweit on vocals was released on April 2009 and 3rd edition of the album included the new single.
Meanwhile on the studio front Calibro 35 recorded the soundtrack of “EUROCRIME”, an American documentary on Italian Crime Movies and started preparing the new album. Besides the band went in the US on a successful club and radio performances tour on October 2009.
On February 2010 the new album was released in Italy on Ghost Records. “Ritornano Quelli di… Calibro 35” (which includes original artwork by Giuliano Nistri, the renowned painter who created 60s and 70s film posters) was recorded and mixed in Milan in 2009 by Tommaso Colliva. The album contains 5 covers, 4 of which are soundtracks to famous Italian cop movies composed by some of the greatest Italian film composers, and 8 original songs.
The cover versions on the album are: ‘Cinque Bambole per La Luna di Agosto’ by Piero Umiliani (from the 1970’s Mario Bava movie with the same title, starring William Berger, Ira von Fürstenberg, Edwige Fenech), ‘La Morte Accarezza Mezzanotte’ by Gianni Ferrio (from a movie directed by Luciano Ercoli), ‘Il Consigliori’ by Riz Ortolani (from the 1973 Alberto De Martino movie with the same title), ‘Milano Odia: La Polizia Non Può Sparare’ by Ennio Morricone (from the 1974 movie directed by Umberto Lenzi). The other cover song ‘Sospesi Nel Traffico’ is a 1979 library track composed by Stefano Torossi.
But “Ritornano Quelli di…Calibro 35” not only contains covers of the themes and the atmospheres of the detective films' soundtracks, it also shines with some original tracks composed by Calibro 35, which would have fit particularly well in those 1970’s movies and the band shows they can easily move along funk, rock jazz and improvisation.
The band is planning an intense Italian tour for summer, including live performances during movies projections. The Italian tour will open on June 8th with the band supporting Muse at Mezza Stadium in Milan/Italy, with Kasabian and Friendly Fire. Then the band will play at the Nova Rock Festival in Nickelsdorf/Austria on June 11th and in London on July 12th.
Calibro 35 are set to release “Ritornano Quelli di… Calibro 35” (Ghost Records) on 8th July 2010 as their debut UK album, while the record will be released in the US on Nublu Records on July 13th.
