Chris Herbert
Chris Herbert lives and works in Birmingham, UK. A dedicated non-musician creating highly-textured, improvised pieces initially via live performance and working alongside local artists in developing sound installations reclaiming the city’s post-industrial spaces.
kranky released Mezzotint in 2006: its murky, crumpled charms were generally well-received.
In the autumn of that year Chris stitched together a sequence drawn from urban field recordings that were broadcast on Resonance FM and later released as Diluted on Nottingham’s fine boutique imprint, Low Point.
Further tracks and remixes have been issued globally by Low Point, Under The Spire and Air Texture.
Working in a relative vacuum, beyond the reach of contemporary electronic music trends, Herbert has focused his interest in intuitive composition. Drawing on a mixed musical palette and interweaving sounds sourced from field recordings and scavenged from domestic environments, augmented by short-wave, degraded cassettes, processed guitar and cymbals. Chris continues to inhabit a highly personal sound-world, creating a layered, fractured music that ebbs and unfurls under its own intuitive logic.
An EP of new material surfaced on Room40 in late 2013, a second full album titled Constants was released also via Room40 in September 2014.
Constants both refined and expanded Herbert's idiosyncratic approach in blending the momentary blooming of rich structures with greyscale microclimates. A signature laminar fog pervades, partially glimpsed events and occasional implications of rhythm drift in and out of view.
