Daniel Burns Findlay was born in Alberta Canada to British parents, April 1976. For the first 24 years of Dan's life nothing of any musical consequence took place. Not even a remotely interesting record collection.
From geologist on West African oil rigs to gold exploration in Irian Jaya, a 1999 job offer landed Dan in Hong Kong... then promptly made him redundant. It eventually clicked that trying to pursue a 'normal' career was just as unreliable a path as doing whatever the hell you liked. Factor in a city where MPCs grew on trees plus an energetic underground party scene: Music meet Dan, Dan meet music.
Stumbling back out to daylight twelve months later, Dan turned sights towards getting a record signed. One-of-hardly-any demo CDs (literally less than a dozen were ever mailed) fortuitously made it to the office of Unique Distribution and the Disuye Records imprint was born, 2001.
Several well received 12”s (no less than four Sureplayer of the Month reviews in UK's DJ Magazine) with firstrate DJ support and Dan's reputation as a producer & mix engineer gathered momentum. A string of unintentional DJ gigs (from Zouk to Ageha), high profile collaborations (Lee Burridge, Hyper, Meat Katie, Sinosine, Jimmy Van M etc.), remixes (U.N.K.L.E., Evil Nine, Stir Fry, Sly Fidelity, Digital Pimp, Aussie rock band Regurgitator), key radio airtime from London to L.A. and decent compilation signings (Bedrock Breaks 2 & 3, Trust The DJ, Ministry, React plus a DJ Magazine cover mount) all meant that by the end of 2005 both Dan F & Disuye Records could be considered well established on the international scene.
Not content just to sit back with a label, studio, agency and potential DJ career Dan felt a bit more action in Hong Kong was required. Commercial income from the studio allowed him to lease a dingy lower basement property in the heart of the city, install a well designed PA system, hire the most upfront DJs et voila a joint called Yumla, 2003.
Dan F's releases, remixes, bar direction & DJ sets have all pushed the definition of club music near to the point of failure... innovating new techniques, merging all styles and avoiding any well trodden path.
Dan F recently co-produced potentially the biggest prog-tech track of 2007 alongside Lee Burridge (& Dan F "Treat Em Mean, Keep Em Keen" Almost Anonymous Records) and has undertaken no less than three new remixes for U.N.K.L.E. (two mixes feature on "Self Defence" Global Underground plus "Burn My Shadow" on James Lavelle's forthcoming Surrender All label). In addition, fresh new 12" tech-bass-minimal-acidelectro- disco-breaky-funk-house plus an album of experimental, cinematic low tempo are all set to drop between now & 2008.
In the world of electronic club music Dan F is an unorthodox & unmatched producer and scene leading DJ. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
