Daniel Kyo
The last 12 months have seen Daniel Kyo achieve a meteoric rise on the international deep house scene. The Spanish DJ and producer has only just got started too and aged just 24, he has already shown what a naturally talented artist he is and has all the signs of developing into a serious player in dance music for many years to come.
Born and raised in Valencia, Daniel drew early inspiration from his father who was a local DJ in the 1970s and grew up surrounded by vinyl in a multitude of musical styles. It wasn't long before he had his first Casio keyboard and was studying classical guitar from the age of eight. By the time he reached 14 he had become obsessed with music and would spend hours at home listening to records while the other kids were playing football or computer games. Three years later he started DJing in local bars.
Depeche Mode, New Order and Everything But The Girl were all early influences and pushed Daniel into making his own music. Armed with only a copy of Fruity Loops, he released his first single aged 17 which was picked up by many of the leading Spanish DJs and licensed to several compilations. By night he'd be checking out the club scene and following his favourite DJs from party to party; on Monday you would find him in the record shops picking up all the hot tracks he'd heard over the weekend.
It was in 2008 when things turned serious, however, and Daniel's productions came to international attention with a series of EPs on some of the best deep house labels around. These included Elevation Recordings, Lost My Dog, Next Dimension Music, Sensual Touch Recordings and Loudeast Records under the Subharmonics name, while there was increasing demand for Daniel’s services as a remixer. The Timewriter, Aaron Carl and Chelonis R. Jones were among those getting the remix treatment on labels like Deepology, Night Drive Music, Dyami Records and Discoteca Music.
There's been plenty of DJ support along the way too with Laurent Garnier, Ralph Lawson, Kevin Yost, Jimpster and Motorcitysoul among those regularly playing his music. So how would Daniel describe his sound?
"I would say deep stuff for the dancefloor," he explains. "Always musical but groovy. I try to have energy and feeling in all my tracks. A good producer has to do what he loves, be patient, be personal, risk, experiment."
For Daniel music is the king above all else. It's this dedication which has won him such support and admiration from his peers. Milton Jackson and Shur-i-kan were among those recognising his talent and signed him to their new Dark Energy Recordings imprint for the 'I Can' EP. It received serious DJ and critical acclaim, and further releases are planned for Dark Energy.
Daniel's also a serious contender behind the decks and since 2008 he has travelled all over the world. He first learnt his craft on Valencia's thriving house scene playing at venues like Hossegor and Wicky where he was resident DJ. It wasn't long before he was playing across Spain and then internationally including trips to Italy, Russia, Slovakia, Georgia and the United Arab Emirates, while he has played for Gifted and 54 in the UK.
Highlights of his DJ career so far include 360 in Dubai, Soniclab in Bratislava, Griboedov in St Petersburg and Guru in Tbilisi, while Daniel also played at the Electrosplash and Palmeres festivals in Spain. Trips to Tokyo, Tunisia, Beirut and South Africa are already lined-up for the summer and Daniel is equally at home playing at an intimate beachfront venue in Valencia as he is playing outdoor arenas and the coolest clubs across the world.
There's no slowdown in his productions either with EPs on 54 Music and I Records out now. Expect future releases on Elevation, Night Drive, I Love Deep Records and Third Ear Recordings along with a collaboration with DJ Yellow on Composite Records. On the remix front, Daniel has recently tackled Kevin Yost's 'Get The Horns' with reworkings of Steve Ferrand on Groove Armada's Pack Up And Dance and Paolo Driver on Hotfingers to follow soon among others.
