Derek Lotek
Derek Lotek uses a collection of vintage drum machines, synth boxes, circuit bent toys and guitar pedals to make lo-fi music varying from wistful cheesy instrumentals to hardcore noise.
Drawing influence from years of club crawling, warehouse party promoting and djing, Derek's music tends to sound like a dj at work in a club complete with a healthy dose of room tone and other-dimensional inner ear noise mangling. His sets often include gabba, dub, casiocore, industrial noise, jungle, trance and techno mixed with pretty much anything else that makes for scary or witty juxtapositions.
From a humble beginning with a set of Synsonics drums, a Casiotone keyboard and a borrowed TR-505, Derek has had the pleasure of collaborating with other noise artists, puppet shows, dancers and theatrical performances for over 20 years. As a constant noise experimenteer, he has created literally hundreds of hours of compositions, several of which have been released on extremely short runs of cassettes and CDs. With the ease of distribution of digital media, he is now releasing as much of his catalog as has survived to become 1s and 0s.
Derek Lotek is on Zilch Records as a solo artist and collaborator with zilch founder SilverlagE. His largest collaborative project The Super Heroes Of Tomorrow includes 20ish artists in 4 states and the tracks utilized in the creation of SHoT music have been recorded in dozens of locations utilizing the ever shrinking recording technology available.
