Ensemble Micrologus
Italy, 1984-present
Ensemble Micrologus is an Italian group who specialise in medieval music. Ranging from four to twelve players and singers they feature pure vocal as well as virtuosic instrumental pieces, including both the religious and the profane from 12th to 16th century in their repertoire.
The ensemble was originally formed by Patrizia Bovi (vocals and harp), Adolfo Broegg (lute, psaltery and citola), Goffredo Degli Esposti (flute, bombarde and bagpipes) and Gabriele Russo (viela, rebec and lyre). It was founded in 1984, shortly after its components participated for several years in the "Calends of May" medieval festival in Assisi (Umbria).
They perform worldwide, introducing one or two new shows every year. Over the years they have produced and performed more than twenty different shows. Most recently they toured with the Belgian contemporary dance show 'Myth', choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. They play reconstructions of early instruments and have researched playing techniques through vestiges in traditional music today as well as through study of original sources. They also teach regularly, including at Urbino, the Abbey of Royaumont near Paris, Copenhagen Renaissance Festival, The Univeristy of Texas at Austin and the Cité de la Musique in Paris.
