Foreign Service Institute
The Foreign Service Institute is the main training facility of American Foreign Service Officers. The institute designed and taught language courses to assist diplomats sent to overseas posts. The courses include books and extensive audio recordings. These materials are now in the public domain, and are in the process of being digitized by volunteers at http://fsi-language-courses.org/. Despite having been designed and recorded in the 1960's-1980's, the courses are still considered to be among the best tools for individual language study, thanks to the audio drills, which help students build fluency through repetitive audio drills.
Language courses that have thus far been digitized by volunteers include: Amharic, Arabic, Bulgarian, Cambodian, Cantonese, Chinese, Chinyanja, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hausa, Hindi, Hebrew, Hungarian, Igbo, Italian, Korean, Lao, Moré, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Twi, Vietnamese, and Yoruba.
