Ismail YK
Ismail YK (born 5th July 1978 in Hamm, as İsmail Yurtseven) is a German-Turkish singer. The YK stands for Yurtseven Kardeşler (siblings who love the fatherland), referring to him and his siblings.
Gathering the techno-culture elements of Turkish immigrants, YK formed his own music. Arabesk, rap and techno can be considered as main noticable elements of YK's sound. These are used to be the main trends of respectively the first, the second and the third generation living in Germany. Also rock and turkish folk music are found in some of the YK's songs like "Allah Belanı Versin" (Eng: God Damn You). It can be heard a zilgit (a scream/severe tongue-lashing used in folk music) behind a guitar solo.
Modernist sides reacted to YK after "Şappur Şuppur" was released sensationally in Turkey. They blamed YK being a post-modernist. YK answered to the rumours claiming that his music is not art politically, saying "I lost one of my gloves.".(He usually wears only one glove)
Fusion of various types of music which are symbols of generation conflict created YK's music. On the other hand, generation conflict is a theme in YK's songs. In "Şappur Şuppur", he tells us a tragedy about a horny teenager shot from home since he went to a bar hoping to get laid. Now YK breathes influence on all Turkish musicians living in Germany.
His hit Bombabomba.com is one of the primary songs about internet and tells us a tale about a horny teenager's excitement in a coupling website. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
