Kotchy
Brooklyn-based producer Kotchy is a singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and all round super talented. If you've been lucky enough to see him live or performing with ... (more) NY revered bands such as The Epochs and Violet (w/members of Fischerspooner / Rufus Wainwright / Joan As Police Woman / polyphonic spree) then more than likely you'll have already taken note! Press credited Switch for Kotchy’s Tricky remix but there’s no mistaking those hushed vocals. Now, fresh from working with Yo Majesty (Domino) and Starkey (Planet Mu), Virus Syndicate (Planet Mu) he’s primed for the release of his debut longplayer “89”.
Kotchy’s percussive roots shine on “89”, electro-acoustic hybrid productions littered with subtle melodies, harmony's with straight heat lyrics and a cool delivery. “89” is Beck, Prince all mixed up with smacks of Pharrell's production. Beats shift from glitched out pop to dubconscious hip-hop with drop and hang stylings like the late J. Dilla and his contemporaries, Warp’s Flying Lotus and Stuff’s Rustie
“She Made it Easy” is the first taste of “89”. It’s a 4/4 hybrid of NYC disco and emo esq guitar. Glitched and whispered it’s a tale of a girl who entered and left his life, but, somewhat unusually, draws inspiration from the ease of the break as oppose to the pain of it. The track has been a big blog favorite, and now the Cat is finally out of the bag.
The flip on the 7” is Bruce Fleetwood, a cheeky little number that combines The Boss and The Mac. Subtle production and simple elegance fuse the two, making one sexy love child. This limited edition 7” (500) with artwork from Kotchy’s lifelong buddy and fast rising street artist Joerael Elliott is available from 29th Sept 2008 from Cargo Distribution
The digital bundle contains “Falling In Love.” A cool as ice number with beats reminiscent of Flying Lotus…. AND… two super powered remixes from Civil stable mates Drums of Death and Reso. Drums of Death’s stock is rising meteorically and his remix shows why, a Kitsch finger clicking disco epic that reworks Kotchy’s hook to great effect. Reso’s remix is a more tekky affair from this up and coming glitch producer, with sounds that lean to Trentmoeller and early acid house riffs, Reso’s remix is sure to infect various dubstep, techno and breaks clubs alike. Coco Electrik work the synths and add a feminine touch with additional vocals to complete the package.
Kotchy is signed to London’s Civil Music who, with Philladelphia’s Seclusiasis are releasing “89” Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
