2011 was a bumper year for young Nightbox. After meeting in secondary school in Ireland and moving to Canada in 2010, the five-piece came charging out of Toronto's Kensington Market in February with a fantastically received debut EP, produced by Sebastien Grainger (Death From Above 1979) and Al-P (MSTRKRFT). The upward trajectory of their reputation shows little sign of slowing.
Nightbox channel a wealth of influences into their sound: the din of Madchester; the throb-click pulse of Tresor-era Berlin; and the addictive songcraft of Hall & Oates and their soft-rock contemporaries. Each song is crafted with the same pick and mix approach, and the resultant tracks have muscle with nuance, as well as plenty of ear candy for the rhythmically inclined. Critical and commercial reaction to the band's eponymous debut was noteworthy on a world scale. The music video for single "Pyramid" earned rotation on Canadian music television stations, and the track was selected to appear on the prestigious French label Kitsune's Maison Compilation 11. It was chosen by NME as a Top-10 download, stating it “quickly takes on a fresh sound of its own”. UK’s Dazed & Confused magazine said “(Pyramid) takes a hedonistic approach with high energy results on a new breed of dance." The EP was re-released in September on Rallye Label in Japan, selling out 1,000 copies on its initial offering.
“All signs point to Nightbox as the most likely successors to Two Door Cinema’s Club’s worldwide ubiquity”, states prominent Irish blog Nialler9. This past summer, Nightbox toured the UK, including plays at the prestigious Reading & Leeds Festivals. They also earned a slot at Ireland’s Electric Picnic Festival where BBC exclaimed, “The glitchy synths and the guitars sound delightful... and by jove do they know how to write a hook”. Nightbox recently supported Death From Above 1979 at their homecoming Toronto show and toured across Canada supporting fellow Canadian artist Lights. They also remixed Lights’ single “Toes”, released as a bonus track on iTunes pre-orders of her sophomore album ‘Siberia’.
Check out Nightbox, because seeing, and hearing, is believing.
