Norrlåtar
Norrlåtar is a folk group from the Norrbotten province in the north of Sweden. Its first ambition was to preserve and continue the local tradition of folk music in the 1970's. More recently, it embraced the world music genre and began to draw inspiration from many parts of the world, including jazz, klezmer and Balkan bands. What originally began as an angry expression of a repressed local identity (the Swedish-, Finnish- and Sami-speaking Norrbottnians) gradually grew to express a multicultural joy of life.
In the 1970's, the group researched folk music traditions in Norrbotten, organised field recordings as documentation, and performed their own interpretations of folk music, often at the Jokkmokk museum and at the Jokkmokk markets. They have been regular guests at the Kaustinen folk music festivals in Finland. The group has also toured Canada in the 1980's, Yugoslavia before the war, Peru and Bolivia in the 1990's, as well as shared gigs in Sweden with Filarfolket and performed at concerts with Norrbotten Big Band.
Norrlåtar celebrated its 30-year anniversary with a farewell concert in March 19–20, 2004.
