Sea Snakes
Sea Snakes was a Canadian band formed in 2002 in Toronto, ON, Canada. They were signed to Three Gut Records until it closed in 2005; the band broke up six months later. The group consisted of Shaw-han Liem (keyboards), Kristian Galberg (guitar), Jeremy Strachan (bass, saxophone), Jim McIntyre (vocals, guitar), and Nathan Lawr (drums).
Sea Snakes began in 2002 as a solo project for McIntyre (of Sympathy Girls, as well as founder of Die!venom) after his former group Blake split up. He enlisted Liem (of I Am Robot and Proud) and Galberg (of Burn Rome in a Dream) to play with him at live shows, and later grew to include Strachan (of Rockets Red Glare) and Lawr (formerly of Royal City), their acquaintances from the Southern Ontario hardcore scene.
In 2003, Sea Snakes entered the Sweatshop, the basement studio run by engineer/producer Jeff McMurrich, and after working for seven months, had created their album Clear as Day, the Darkest Tools. The album also featured horn player Gille Thibodeau and string players Owen Pallett and Mike Olsen (both of The Hidden Cameras and Arcade Fire). It was released in late 2004, with a release party held October 23rd that year.
Their label, Three Gut Records, disbanded in 2005, as did the group, despite hints of recording a follow-up album. Liem and Galberg continued to play as I Am Robot and Proud and Burn Rome in a Dream, respectively. Strachan went on to form Feuermusik and play in The Hylozoists and Hopeful Monster. Lawr formed Nathan Lawr and the Minotaurs, a band occasionally accompanied by Liem and Galberg; Strachan contributes arrangements as well.
The group (excluding Shaw) briefly reunited on September 6th, 2005, to perform as the backing band for Mount Eerie on his In the World/I Love All You Guys Slow split single with The Love of Everything, with McIntyre playing drums in place of Shaw. Galberg and McIntyre also recently reunited to form Horse Hands, which opened for Liem's I Am Robot and Proud on November 5th, 2010. Read more on Last.fm.
