Sgt Slick
Sgt. Slick is also known as Melbourne DJ Andy J and has certainly immersed himself in the world of clubs and club music over the last 10 years. In that time he has DJ'd all over the country, run a record label, remixed countless club tunes, fronted a national radio mix show, won ARIA awards, mixed top selling mix cd's, been profiled nationally on tv, and released tunes under no less than 10 aliases! Phew… Andy’s main musical outlet is his ever evolving, elusive alter ego Sgt Slick. Under that name he produced one of Australia’s finest house music moments in “White Treble, Black Bass”. That track topped club charts in Australia and all over Europe / UK, eventually netting Andy an ARIA award for Best Dance Release in ’98. Follow up single “Let It Ride” repeated that success, with another ARIA nomination and chart and radio success. “Tha Muzik” (featuring Dirty South and Alex Van Allf mixes) smashed it up all over Europe in early 2006 after being snapped up by Euro mega label “Purple Eye”, and the latest offering “Automatic Machine”, in collaboration with Pitch Dark, is about to be unleashed on Vicious, with rocking Vandalism mixes attached. For his tune “Tilt My Hat”, Andy decided after many years to release a record under his DJ name “Andy J”. With it’s solid slices of INXS’ synth rock classic “Burn For You” intact, and slamming Sgt Slick, Live Element and Kam Denny mixes, Tilt My Hat became an instant club and radio favorite. The follow up “I Will Have You” was also a massive club and radio hit, receiving A rotation on the Nova network and reaching the top 5 of the ARIA Australian Club Chart. As a member of pumped up house duo Smash N Grab (along with Darren Glen), Andy has also achieved recent success with the release of “She Don’t Like That”. A firm favorite on national radio and video shows, the track went on to become a top 40 smash, as did the follow up “Like An Animal”. It is under this name that Andy also produced and mixed the weekly mix show “LOADED” for 5 years, with an audience of half a million across Australia on the Austereo Network (Fox FM, 2Day FM, B105 etc) every Saturday night, making him one of the nation’s most influential DJs. As a member of production team “Blackout” (along with John Course, Andy Van and Darren Glen), Andy had a massive hit with the tune Gotta Have Hope, which reached the top position on club charts the world over (including Mixmag UK and ARIA Club Chart), also going top 40 on the UK singles charts. Also as a member of the duo “Firefox”, Andy achieved huge success in 2006 with “Sex Shooter”. Out on Melbourne based label Vinyl Pusher, the track was picked up by the world’s biggest club music label: Ministry of Sound’s “Data”, for UK and European release. Remixes on the package included Richard Grey, Mike Di Scala and the Hoxton Whores, and the track eventually ended up on the world’s highest selling mix CD, the MoS UK Annual. The follow up “Pull My Trigger” is expected to repeat it’s success when released mid 2007. The boys have also mixed the new Vinyl Pusher “Pure” cd alongside Melbourne’s Boogs, and are hitting the road with nationwide DJ dates to promote the release. In the clubs Andy has certainly made his mark on the decks, with a string of long term residencies in Melbourne and across the country. Along the way he has played at some of the nation’s biggest clubs and parties, and supported the likes of Roger Sanchez, DJ Falcon, Carl Cox and Fatboy Slim. He can currently be found spinning the wheels weekly in Melbourne clubs Room, Boutique, Viper, POD, and more, and he travels regularly for interstate gigs, on a number of occasions hitting 3 states in a single weekend. Andy has also become the DJ of choice for many major event after parties such as The Australian Open, Australian Grand Prix, The Logies, Melbourne Fashion Week, and numerous motion picture releases. Andy’s remix schedule over the past 5 years has also been solid, with mixes for paulmac, Delta Goodrem, Tina Arena, and most recently Quesh and Live Element to his credit. He has also appeared on Triple J’s “Mixup” program 3 times, been profiled on Foxtel’s music channel “Club V”, and even had a cameo role as a club DJ in Australian movie “The Wogboy”! His last 2 mix CD releases, “Wild Nights” 2005 and 2006, were amongst the highest sellers of each year respectively, and with the 2007 instalment completed and approaching release, expect a massive Smash N Grab club tour in the mid to late months of the year.
