The Hatters
There are at least three artists named "The Hatters": 1) A Russian folk rock band from Saint Petersburg; 2) A 1990s jam band; 3) A 2000-'10s garage punk band from Brighton, UK.
1) THE HATTERS appeared on the musical stage not so long ago, but broke the stage from the very beginning! The band was established in the cultural capital of Russia - St. Petersburg. All the future band members gathered in the same city at the same time, coming from many different parts of the vast country.
What makes The Hatters different from all the other bands? The band is playing without a guitar! Drums, bass-balalaika, trombone, violin and accordion. Do you want to hear something else? THE HATTERS spice up the concept of percussion by using not only a standard set like triangle or tambourine. Scotch? Kids toys? Chains? Washboard? You will discover all this sounds in THE HATTERS songs.
THE HATTERS concerts are unique experiences. The group comes up with new performance ideas constantly like interacting with the audience and shaking the dancefloor! Coming to the live performances one will participate in mass dances, take part in a Slavic circle dance, watch as the T-shirts are torn and stool fights happen on the stage and then bird houses are worn on the heads of the musicians! And much much more!
If you want to add some craziness to your life, get a buzz from it and have a great laugh – come to THE HATTERS show! Want to jump, swing, sing along with the crowd from the first note to the last – welcome to THE HATTERS show.
One may wonder why there is so much trash and craziness? The whole answer is hidden in the fact the band members are simple Russian guys! Russian style - this is what gave birth to THE HATTERS, this is what they began to do on stage from the very beginning and continue to do at their every show. RUSSIAN STYLE is the band’s heart!
February 23, 2016 is the band’s birthday. During the band’s short existence in the music industry THE HATTERS visited many major festivals of the country: Wild Mint, Nashestvie, Stereoleto, Dobrofest, Inspiration. And that was only the beginning. The first musical video was presented in September - I'm Not Easy Buddy filmed on a phone. The video gained over 2 million views in the first weeks. In October, the band performed in Moscow with over 900 people in the audience. The same month the first big concert took place in St. Petersburg where 1,800 people gathered. November, 7 THE HATTERS shared the stage with the giants of the world music scene - Emir Kusturica and Goran Bregovic. Together musicians performed the song "Gas-Gas". A week later a new video is presented - RUSSIAN STYLE, which gained a million views in the first five days. Also THE HATTERS performed two shows in Saint-Petersburg and Moscow together with Little Big, showcasing some of their own songs and covers on Little Big popular track together with the rave group. At this time, THE HATTERS are aired on only one radio station of the country.
You can use a lot of clichés, find similarities with other bands, search for influences to describe THE HATTERS style, but this unique collection of instruments, variety of the performances, interactions with the audience which can be heard in all songs and seen live on THE HATTERS show will not leave you disappointed. It will definitely become clear to you why THE HATTERS call the style in which they perform "Russian Gypsy alco-hardcore played on your mental strings.” You will love it!
2) The Hatters (originally The Mad Hatters) were a blues and funk based rock group that formed at The University of Pennsylvania in 1989 and came to prominence touring on the jam band club circuit between 1991 and 1995. In 1993 The Hatters signed to Atlantic Records and released 3 albums in 3 years: LIVE Thunderchicken (1993), The Madcap Adventures of the Avocado Overload (1994), and You Will Be You (1995). The group disbanded shortly after the release of their final album. The Hatters were Adam Hirsh (vocals, guitar), Adam Evans (guitar, vocals), Billy Jay Stein (keyboards, vocals), Jon Kaplan (bass), and Tommy Kaelin (drums).
3) The Hatters, formed in the autumn of '08, are a seminal 3 piece garage punk band from Brighton, UK. They are a band with a sound, politics and a punk ethos that sets them apart from the rest. They’re based in Brighton and have been gigging regularly in the south east of the UK. They have now begun to firmly establish themselves as a raw and energetic live act within the Brighton live music scene.
