The Have
It has been two years since The Have released their self - titled debut E.P / mini – album and during those two years the band have kept themselves busy writing, touring and recording. With their first full length record “Back To The Burning Wreck” waiting for release, the boys look set to stamp their mark on the New Zealand music scene once again…….
Forming at high school in the small North lsland town of Wanganui during the first month of 2002, the lads found common ground through musical tastes and styles. After honing their craft in an abandoned nightclub overlooking the Wanganui River they released their first single “Right On” , which was recorded at York St studios. The song was later licensed for an Xbox TV commercial and Canterbury commercial for the Rugby world Cup and the Super 12 in Australia. The video was a finalist in the “Breakthrough Artist” category in the 2003 Juice TV awards.
At the end of 2002 in order to push their music to a wider audience The Have took part in the Auckland based World Series with a positive response.
“It was the end of the night. I was drained. They just rocked. They really blew me away”
Arnold Frolows, Ex Music Director, Triple J Network.
Spending the most part of 2003 building a live profile, commuting 6 hours to Auckland on a regular basis and sleeping on their managers living room floor the band decided to make the move and relocate to Auckland.
Before the big move they released their second single “the Fuzz” with a do-it-yourself video created by friends of the band clearly reflecting their time spent in Wanganui. The song was later licensed for worldwide release of the EA game “Rugby 2005”
Fitting right into the Auckland live scene in 2004 and releasing a third single “What You Owe”, the band were invited to attend the South by Southwest music festival in Austin Texas in March after submitting an un-mastered copy of their yet unreleased E.P. Their SXSW showcase was heavily attended by UK and Us music industry people including Carson Daly (MTV US), Steve Lamacq (Radio One UK), Zane Lowe ( Radio One and MTV UK)
In April 2004 the UK music industry magazine ‘Music Week’ did a ‘Best of SXSW 2004’ story with an accompanying free CD. Out of the 11 bands featured, 10 were from North America and one was from Wanganui, New Zealand – The Have! Other bands in the Top 11 were The Killers, TV on The Radio, and The Dears.
“ This years Kiwi buzz band was The Have, who attracted a heavy count of A&R heads”
Music Week
After this successful SXSW performance the four lads were invited to perform in the US and embarked on a trip to New York and LA where they played well attended show cases at The Mercury Lounge in New York and The Key Club on LA’s sunset strip. During this trip the band gained the support of the A&R Network in Los Angeles and consequently “The Fuzz” and Monday Through Friday” have been played on Indie 103.1
Back in New Zealand the boys released their E.P/mini – album through Shock Records in May 2004 to some great reviews:
‘The Wanganui band's seven tracks CD is a sexy, teenage aural pleasure….this mini-album is a 2004 catalogue of 70s rock style and cool energy, blessed with hooks and mucho good taste. Catch them live while you can afford it.’ Real Groove
‘What a pearler - seven tracks of scorching hard rocking bliss from this young New Zealand (hailing from Wanganui originally no less) four piece who are quite definitely going places.’ Smoke CD’s
“Basically the E.P was a collection of songs recorded and written from the time of the bands inception to where we are to date” explains lead singer Brodie White.
The E.P’s final single “Monday Through Friday” saw the band moving in a somewhat different direction, towards a more bluesy sound and feel.
During the months of July/August 2004 The Have embarked on their first National tour with Deja Voodoo and The Bleeders. The tour was incredibly successful and beneficial for the band and it was remembered notoriously throughout New Zealand.
2005 saw the band once again accepted to SXSW music festival in Texas. An invitation too good to turn down The Have managed to scrape together enough cash for the second time and preformed another acclaimed, packed showcase.
“ It’s been a long time since I had seen a great rock and roll show……(and) I would be hust as quick to proclaim them rock and roll as hell”
“ It’s a Texas rock and roll tradition to spit beer on bands we dig to show appreciation; this was the only show during SXSW where I had to wipe my camera off”
US writer Audrey Edwards for Rip It Up.
Through a lot of hard work on behalf of the bands manager, Teresa Patterson to insure there was a good crowd of industry folk and punters attending their 2nd SXSW showcase the band managed to impress US producer Barrett Jones’ (Foo Fighters, Nirvana, The Melvins, Evermore) agent who had been in contact with Teresa since their LA showcase. He was so blown away that he passed on a copy of their demo to Barrett.
The rest of the year The Have spent demo-ing and writing new songs at their home and at end of 2005 The Have sent Barrett a 23-song demo disc of home recordings and the deal was done. For The Have it was the ultimate complement to be working with an international producer.
Pre-production began in January 2006, the 23 songs were cut down to 13 and The Have spent the warm summer month locked away in The Lab studios with Barrett creating their debut full length record.
“Working with a producer was a new thing for us, it was good to have someone with an outside ear giving his opinion and advice on the songs, and we felt that Barrett certainly had some good advice especially with his background in the music industry” Peter Mangan
“The album comprises of a much wider range of styles. There’s some of the heaviest stuff we have ever done but we feel there is also a new depth to the material” Mike De Marie
And now at the ripe old age of 21 The Have are eagerly awaiting the release of “Back To The Burning Wreck”.
