The Yearning
The Yearning is band signed to Elefant Records, founded by songwriter/producer Joe Moore. The debut EP, ‘Jukebox Romance’, was written and recorded in a cupboard under the stairs(!) at his home in Faringdon, UK, with vocalists Justyna Halas and Maddie Dobie, who share the lead vocal duties on this release. Maddie Dobie is now currently the singer of The Yearning. With the help of a few friends (Gordon Campbell and Mark Kiff on guitars; Zoe Illes on cello), Joe lovingly crafted and produced ‘Jukebox Romance’ over a period of 2 years.
The mission of The Yearning is simple: to create (or recreate) a sound that reflects the band’s title. Every song aches of a bygone innocence and simplicity; yet the music itself is far from straightforward, taking its influences (among others) from Phil Spector’s girl groups, Brian Wilson’s ‘Pet Sounds’ and Irving Berlin’s classic songwriting structures. Centering on the voice, harmony and echo, each song sets out to tug at the heartstrings and evoke something beautiful, with romantic string and brass arrangements deftly framing the delicate vocals. ‘You Make Lovin’ You Easy’, ‘Baby Be Mine’ and ‘The Way You Love Me’ celebrate the joys of teenage love through sugar-sweet choruses, while ‘Don’t Call Me Baby’, ‘Boy Racer’ and ‘Kiss You In The Summertime’ are mini-dramas, drenched in melancholy and bittersweet sadness.
