We Are Tokyo
We Are Tokyo formed in 2009 when lead singer and bassist Alex Fox wanted to bring to life the songs he had been writing in his home studio. After writing tracks such as Colour Blind and XY, Alex looked to bring it to the live stage with a full line up. Drummer Tom Wheeler instantly felt a connection to the band’s fresh sound after hearing radio play of an early demo. Following an impressive audition, he and Alex began work on records for a release in Spring 2009.
After a short run of gigs with the original line up, We Are Tokyo released their first EP “Bright Lights” on iTunes in May 2009. The tracks received airplay and recognition from BBC Radio 1, BBC6 Music, BBC Bristol Introducing and other European and American stations. Riding from the release of “Bright Lights”, We Are Tokyo began playing shows around Bristol, sharing the stage with local and international acts including Passion Pit, Grammatics, Metronomy, and Small Black.
The band released two follow up singles titled ‘Best In Me’ in 2009 and ‘Bullets’ in 2010 and have continued to push the boundaries of their live act. After a few member changes in 2009, Tom met current guitarist John Millichip and keyboardist Tom Vincer through BIMM (Bristol Institute of Modern Music).
We Are Tokyo’s distinctive sound comprises of a blend of Electronic and Indie Dance music fronted by a powerful vocal. Through the use of euphoric choruses, catchy riffs and driving beats, the band’s energetic pop goodness creates a rich sound which is danceable and introspective. In addition to writing original tracks the band has remixed many artists, including MGMT (‘Kids’) and one of their own tracks, which has heavily influenced their sound.
We Are Tokyo have been busy in the studio with their brand new single ‘Your Eyes Lie’ along side shooting a promotional video for release in 2011. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
