unkie
unkie is a Japanese instrumental rock band formed in 2006. Originally they only intended to play one gig together but ended up forming a permanent band. At first only playing at live gigs, but later decided to record an album named the Price of Fame, which was released in July 2007. Their second album too many secrets was recorded in Chicago and produced by recording engineer Steve Albini of Nirvana fame, and released in October 2008. The band consists of three members: TOKIE on bass, Yutaka Aoki on guitar and Hiroshi Kido on drums, all of which have played in established Japanese bands earlier.
The majority of unkie's songs are written and composed by Yutaka Aoki whose frenetic, fast paced playing style provides the signature style of the band.
Their single Save it was released on Sep 4th as an online release only and reached the #1 spot on the myspace ringtone download charts in Japan.
But Still Beginning, the latest single in the online release series was released on March 17th.
unkie's 3rd album DEVIL'S RIDE is scheduled to be released on September 16th, 2011. Their 3rd album is self produced and limited to online pre-orders of 2000 copies only. The album cover was designed by manga artist Atsushi Kaneko. Previous online only release singles 'Save it' and 'But Still Beginning' will be included as bonus tracks.
The new album sees the band take on a more 'metal' approach with heavier, darker overtones and more melancholic melodies.
